AN INTRODUCTION TO ELECTRONIC WASTE MARKET SIZE

Electronic waste market size

Every year the world produces approximately 50 million tonnes of Electronic or Electrical waste. This number is equivalent to the combined weights of all commercial aircrafts ever built. Despite 66 per cent of the world having some kind of E-waste legislation only 20 per cent is ever recycled. In India, the number is much smaller. Currently India is amongst the bottom five countries on the Environmental Performance Index. On the one hand we only recycle only 2 per cent of the E-waste we produce and on the other we remain a major global importer of E-waste. While the incineration and dumping in landfills remains as one of the key sources of contamination of land, air and water resources it also causes a tremendous loss to the national and global economy.

Understanding Electronic Waste

We have fallen prey to the consumer culture in such a manner that today we replace items in a jiffy. With our dire dependence on our smart phones, laptops and other such gadgets, there is an insatiable urge (and in many cases need) to keep updating/replacing them with better models. So, no matter how much we loved our previous smartphone in a couple of years it begins to be obsolete. But sadly, this is just one half of the problem, the other half remains with its disposal. However much we may love these gadgets of ours or however smart they become, our disposal of them remains just as merciless and primitive as before. The pattern of irresponsible disposal has been ingrained so vehemently in our minds that without an aggressive and all-intensive campaign aimed at educating every individual by including all sectors of the society we’d remain at the same standards as we are today. Your smartphone, computer, laptop, printer, fridge or toaster along with other gadgets have long been adding to the overwhelming pile of the E-waste of the world and according to a recent report by the World Economic Forum as we stood at about 50 million MT at 2018. That’s equivalent to the mass of more than 4,500 Eiffel Towers and the number will only grow henceforth.

ABOUT Ye Prayas

We offer quality control & sustainability solutions for businesses and corporations.

KNOW ABOUT US

Ye Prayas in hindi means “this effort” and we are trying to make that effort to formalize the waste management in India by the vision of disrupting the waste Industry through technology and innovations, thus changing the ways (Tareeke) we use to dispose and handle our waste. Statistics say that Ninety-five percent of E-waste in India is being recycled through the informal sector and the people involved in these activities are directly exposed to the toxic fumes and hazards arising out of it.  In fact, only five percent of the e-waste produced is being handled via formal units. On the other hand, over 3000 units engaged in informal sector have popped up in and around the major metropolitan cities of the country. A large cluster of industries are in Delhi, Tamil Nadu, U.P., Karnataka, Maharashtra, Gujarat, Kerala, Andhra Pradesh, West Bengal, Rajasthan, etc. The overarching problem has been looming over our heads since a long time and only becoming bigger with every gadget we buy, moved by this we at Ye Prayas have stepped in, trying to make an effort to rope in the informal sector as well has curb the irresponsible disposal methods. We offer an 8-step program which comprehensively covers the different aspects of this problem including EPR fulfilment, B2B linking, Auditing, Consultancy, Awareness, Academic Curriculum, Data Sanitization and Office Decommissioning.

Founder`s Message

Umesh Prasad Singh

“I grew up watching Mountains being reduced, trees uprooted, ponds drying up, fields being dug up all to fill the insatiable desire of Industrialism”

“The tacit desires that were stumping over my soul all along finally got a voice- Ye Prayas in the least is the articulation of this voice”

I was born amidst nature- in a distant village of Bihar and I think it is from the very genesis of my existence that I struck a unique resonance with mother Nature. My family was somewhat well off, my ancestors had worked hard to provide their following generations a vast amalgamation of rich arable land. In fact, when I look back, I realise, my family had been responsible for employing many in the village, my beloved father himself was running successful businesses in transport and hoteliering. But as fate must have seen fit- my birth was followed by a successive decline in both our family’s businesses as well as in the status of mother nature that fuelled our spirit to run such ventures. I grew up watching Mountains being reduced, trees uprooted, ponds drying up, fields being dug up all to fill the insatiable desire of Industrialism and at the same time, the economic prosperity of my people was also on the decline, thus I spent most my adult life working for the food corporation of India (something that was beyond the imagination of any of my visionary ancestors). I did this as I was constantly haunted by the thoughts of ineducation, poverty and the mere emasculation of my people, and I call them my people not in any derogatory sense, the responsibility to provide and look after the people in my village is one of the most priceless powers that I have inherited from my forefathers. So, I worked, I worked to fund the education of dozens of young boys and girls, to start a number of community benefit programs. But, with this work my vision too expanded- I was no longer looking at my fellow village folk as my people, a profuse introspection and expansion of knowledge made my connection to the greater human kind more profound than it was ever before and the tacit desires that were stumping over my soul all along finally got a voice- Ye Prayas in the least is the articulation of this voice. Its an effort to undo the mistakes of the past, to recover from the atrocities that we have mercilessly inflicted on mother nature for centuries now, to extend an olive branch to the supreme nature herself before her wrath (a well deserved consequence of our own doing) destroys most of what we hold dear. Climate change has become Climate Emergency now, Recycling, Reusing, Refurbishing these are no longer words but the only means of survival we have. Thus, I as any responsible human being am making an effort and I sincerely pray to god that Ye Prayas brings some good to the whole of human kind.

“We have come up with a corporate structure that allows us to be a balancing force between the modernization i.e. use of modern techniques of packaging, electronic, Biomedical and other harmful substances in proper manner and traditionalization of the environment i.e. dispose these end of life wastes by a proper process and technique so that we have less or no impact on our environment ”

The last few years have brought both challenges and changes in our industry based on which our thinking pattern has also changed. We have started to be more responsible in adding value to our environment. We have even adopted the policies for saving our planet at the policy making levels. Our government has become more responsible. Thinkers and visionaries have joined this industry for making our mother earth more sustainable.

With the same vision of returning back to mother earth of what we have eroded from her Ye Prayas is a step (Prayas) in making the earth a better place to live, with a vision of changing whatever little we can, we have come up with a corporate structure that allows us to be a balancing force between the modernization i.e. use of modern techniques of packaging, electronic, Biomedical and other harmful substances in proper manner and traditionalization

of the environment i.e. dispose these end of life wastes by a proper process and technique so that we have less or no impact on our environment – we are bound to work towards a sustainable and circular economy, this has created the enthusiasm in us to operate and indulge our self in a more competitive business and market but with not only to make this industry a profit making but also to increase the work culture and safety. The ongoing economic and social changes have required the focused attention of all our stakeholders to improve performance and position us for success no matter what kind of markets we encounter. As we instantly navigate the short-term challenges, we will not lose sight of our long-term vision to manage and deliver superior recycling solution of e-waste, plastic, hazardous and other waste to the world. In fact, our team has had discussions and we are working towards a new sustainability strategy that potentially increases the number of commitments and targets we intend to reach in the coming five years and new services and solutions to the market.

By using external and peer benchmarks, we have identified gaps and in a process of developing more integrated and holistic set of goals and targets to drive sustainability into recycling further into our core business processes by adding the recycling solutions of new products every time.
